Hay budden anvil serial numbers10/25/2022 Some say metalworking, which required an anvil of some form or another, began in the area of what is today Turkey and Iran sometime around 6,000 B.C. I would recommend you coat the front face of the front foot with soapstone or flour and look harder for a serial number. You can see on the heel of your anvil, as on mine, some pretty large fuller marks from them drawing down the shape. Thereof, how can you tell a Trenton anvil? They also made an Plowmakers Anvil, a double Horn Anvil, a Hornless Anvil, a Sawmakers Anvil, and Coopers Steel faced Beck Irons. Prior to facing, you may want to clean up some of the chipped edges. Hay-Budden manufactured a number of different pattern anvils, making the farriers anvil with and without the clip horn. you may be able to beg or borrow some surface grinder time. If it is not too hard, you might be able to mill the face successfully with carbide. It should be somewhat hardened but you should be able to clean it up with a grinder. The face of the anvil will be steel plate, forge welded to the body. It is not uncommon to see evidence of chain in the body of old anvils.
